CIF-SDS heat rules (WBGT)
Paste the section's official heat table here. I won't write the thresholds from memory.
Contacts
Emails only. Your staff list is marked confidential and this site is public, so cell and desk numbers are left off until you decide.
Public emergency numbers
District bus pickup (late bus) and on-campus night contact are on the confidential list. Coaches can get them from the AD.
Schedules
League: Grossmont Hills/Valley. Conference: Grossmont.
Confirm these dates are for the current year. The graphic has no year on it.
Conference schedules (GUHSD)Enter your schedule on CIF Home. Send Gina Howard your entire facility usage schedule so your venue isn't double booked.
Check the season shown on a conference schedule before you plan around it.
Report Score
Report scores on CIF HomeEvery sport reports scores on CIF Home, even sports that also use another platform for rankings. Your pre-season sport meeting tells you which extra platform to use.
- MaxPreps: check that your schedule and record look right.
- LaxNumbers: lacrosse rankings.
Publicity & Social
Official MVHS logo folderFollow and tag @monarchsports1 on social. Nevin Sarao (ASB) handles publicizing games, the weekly newscast and senior nights.
School-wide announcement requestClearance
An athlete is cleared when the physical was done within one calendar year and online clearance plus the signature page are complete. Clearance is per sport, and athletes need it to try out, practice or play.
Physicals are required every year and must be valid for the whole season. Only an M.D. or D.O. can complete them. Other providers need an M.D. or D.O. signature and stamp.
The CIF Ethics in Sports policy is signed by parent and athlete inside the online packet.
Coach steps
- Family clears online and turns in the signature page.
- Send accurate rosters to Debbie Montana right after cuts, and keep her updated as athletes drop or are released.
- Enter your schedule and report scores on CIF/MaxPreps.
Exact Home Campus click paths for pulling the cleared report and building the roster. Not in your documents.
No student names, ever, on this page.
Eligibility
A student is academically eligible if they:
- Are enrolled in at least 4½ five-credit classes handbook text reads "4 ½ 5 credit classes". Confirm wording
- Are passing 4 classes
- Keep a 2.0 GPA or higher
- Have no more than one "U" in conduct/effort
Attendance: athletes must attend all periods of the school day to practice or play, unless excused by a parent or guardian.
Age: a student whose 19th birthday falls before June 15 of the prior school year is ineligible for the next school year.
Outside teams: competing or practicing on an outside team in the same sport during the high school season makes a student ineligible.
Probation and appeals
9th graders get one appeal per school year (must be passing at least 4 classes). Grades 10–12 get one additional, one-time appeal for GPA. One "U" in conduct in a grading period earns one appeal per year. Two "U"s are not eligible for probation. To start, the student sees their Assistant Principal or the Athletic Director.
Grading periods and effective dates
Paste the district's official grade-reporting calendar. I won't guess these dates.
Coach Requirements
Coaches' responsibilities (from the handbook)
- Academics come first.
- Give schedules for practices, tournaments and games, and communicate changes promptly.
- Apply school and team rules to all athletes equally.
- Explain NFHS, CIF, GUHSD, conference and team rules to athletes and parents, including your vacation and absence policy.
- Return parent calls and emails in a timely manner.
Expectations checklist
- Every coach, paid or volunteer, must be cleared annually with Debbie Montana before any contact with athletes. Adding someone after the coaches' meeting? Send them to Debbie to meet with Dan Santos first.
- Turn in transportation requests for league games to Gina Howard as soon as possible, and tell her about any change.
- Submit facility requests for home games, tournaments and practices.
- Enter home games in Arbiter or your sport's officiating program. You are responsible for officials, including telling them about time changes or cancellations.
- Enter schedules and report scores on CIF/MaxPreps.
- Do not play an academically ineligible athlete. Watch for Debbie's emails.
- Athletes serving a sit-out period may practice if cleared, but can't compete until you get an email saying so.
- Hand out team rules, get signatures, and cover hazing with athletes and parents.
- No practices, meetings or conditioning on Sundays.
- Team chats are monitored by you, a mandated reporter and district employee.
- Athletes stay with their team, in uniform, until competition ends. Never leave athletes unattended, and never give keys to athletes.
Injuries
- Injury: student incident paperwork only.
- Concussion: all three forms (two concussion forms and one incident report).
- Get paperwork to Nurse Jen Enright right away. If the trainer is there, she handles it. If not, you do. Emailing a photo is fine.
- Never keep a doctor's note, in season or out. Give it to Nurse Jen or the trainer.
- Injuries need an incident report. Suspected head injuries also need concussion paperwork. If the trainer isn't there, this falls on the coach.
- Never hesitate to call 9-1-1.
- Don't play or practice an athlete with a suspected concussion or injury until MVHS tells you they're medically cleared.
- Don't keep original medical notes. Send students to Nurse Jen Enright, Debbie Montana or Dan Santos.
- If the trainer is present, she is in charge.
New-coach onboarding steps (certifications, fingerprinting, trainings) and stipend schedule. Debbie Montana handles stipends.
Uniforms
- Uniforms and equipment are loaned, unless bought in a spirit pack, and must be returned at season's end.
- An athlete who loses items can't join another sport until the item is returned or the fine is paid.
- Athletes owe for everything issued to them. Graduation privileges can be withheld.
- Get uniform designs (including t-shirts and warmups) approved by Dan Santos before ordering. Monte Vista is an Adidas school; use Prime Sports.
- Uniforms can't be personalized or modified. Athletes dress as a team.
Jordan Abruzzo (Equipment Attendant) issues and stores uniforms and enters fines. He needs current rosters. Distribution dates and fine amounts
Transfers
In season: moving from one in-season sport to another in the same season is normally not allowed. If there are special circumstances, talk to both coaches first, then administration.
Dropping a sport: talk to your coach and return all equipment and uniforms.
